Contract logistics

Definition

Contract logistics is a long-term outsourcing arrangement in which a logistics provider manages some or all of a client’s warehousing, distribution, transport and related operations under a formal contract. The provider often runs the client’s warehouse, staff and systems, and is paid on agreed service levels and fees. It differs from simple transport contracts because the provider takes on operational responsibility for a broader part of the supply chain.

Why does contract logistics matter?

Contract logistics lets a business focus on its core activities while a specialist manages warehouse space, labour, equipment and distribution. It can reduce fixed costs, give access to expertise and systems, and scale up or down with demand. For the provider, long contracts secure steady revenue and allow investment in facilities and technology that a single client could not justify alone.

How does contract logistics work?

The client and provider agree a contract covering the scope of services, performance targets, pricing, volumes and contract length, often three to five years. The provider sets up or takes over the warehouse and staff, implements its systems, and manages inbound, storage, picking and outbound flows. Performance is reported against agreed metrics, such as order accuracy and on-time dispatch. Pricing usually combines fixed management fees with charges for each activity or unit handled.

Industries and operations that use contract logistics

  • Retail and department store distribution
  • Fashion and apparel fulfilment
  • Consumer electronics distribution
  • Pharmaceutical and medical supply
  • Automotive parts and aftermarket logistics
  • Food and beverage distribution
  • E-commerce fulfilment
  • Manufacturing supply chains

Example in practice

A consumer electronics brand in Madrid, Spain outsources its distribution for Southern Europe to a contract logistics provider. Under a four-year contract, the provider runs the brand’s 30,000-square-metre warehouse in Zaragoza, manages the staff and inventory system, and handles inbound deliveries, order picking and outbound transport to retailers in Spain, Portugal and southern France. The brand pays a fixed monthly management fee plus charges per order and per pallet handled. Monthly reports track order accuracy and on-time dispatch against the agreed targets.
